Bert Lochs

I am a professional trumpet player, composer of both jazz and classical pieces for small and large ensembles alike and a teacher. I am leader/initiator of two trio's: Trio Bert Lochs and Lochs/Balthaus/Herskedal and I play in the Guus Tangelder Bigband, Pieter Basts E.S.P and the Jasper Somsen Group. With my trio's I made some very well received CD's and I played at the North Sea Jazz Festival and a lot of Dutch and German venues. I teach at home and at the music school of Alphen a/d Rijn. One of my main skills is teaching the Balanced Embouchure method. A method of trumpet pedagogue Jeff Smiley. I discovered it in 2002 and it helped me play a LOT better, and it completely turned around my view of how to play and teach the trumpet.

Connecting to web 2.0

I tried to hook up this blog with Facebook, but there seems to be some kind of trouble. I will try this later, so that everybody interested, can read my posts at different spots. Pfew, it's not really easy to connect to web 2.0. Any advice is welcome.

Video of Lochs/Balthaus/Herskedal at North Sea Jazz

Dirk posted a couple of video's of our trio playing at the North Sea Jazz Festival 2010. We played in the Yenisei Hall. It was packed and the people actually stayed the whole concert! That was a feast, and we were having a ball. I thought it was a pretty good concert.
I don't post the URL here, because I already posted it on Facebook, and I made it a Favorite on my Hubjazz Channel on Youtube. Don't want the movies to appear three times in a row. I f you want to see them, I think it is easy enough to find them.
Maybe if you were there, you could post a little comment on it. I would appreciate it.

My Youtube channel

I happen to have a nice Youtube Channel. If you want to look at some video's of me playing in different settings, please visit http://www.youtube.com/user/Hubjazz?feature=mhum

The trumpeter's mind

These video's are seriously funny. It takes somebody who has a very good insight in the trumpeter's mind.

And another one

Oh, and if somebody knows how to upload a Youtube movie, I would be very grateful. For now I can only give the URL, but that doesn't look really nice.

Why this blog?

The reason for this blog is that I think there are some people in this world, that could be interested in what I do, write and teach. I want to reach out to those people and try and get to talk to them and learn from each other.
Maybe there are people who just like to read what is is like to be a pro player in The Netherlands, for those I hope to write some insightful stories about allday life as a trumpetplayer.
I know that there are people interested in my music. Maybe they want to know how I do that, what my inspiration comes from, or what I think of when writing music (honestly, I don't know the answer to that, but I can search my soul and maybe come up with something useful to other aspiring writers).
Then there is a group of people that want to know about my teaching methods. I am one of a growing group of Balanced Embouchure teachers. I discovered this method in 2002, and it turned around the way I look upon playing and teaching the trumpet.
Finally, I really love 'trumpet talk'. Everything related to this piece of brass tubing (of which Dizzy Gillespie said something like: there it lies in its velvet case, ready to fuck you up, hahahaha) has my deepest interest. I love to discuss mouthpieces, embouchure, trumpets, leadpipes (although not my forte), brands, gadgets and new literature and teaching methods.

Adsense and the sense of it

A clarification of the Google Ads to the left of this page.

When I started my first and commercial version of Trio Bert Lochs,  back in 2006, I subscribed to GoogleAds, because I wanted people to find the trio and book me. To a certain degree, it worked that way, but after a few years, it didn't really pay off. I didn't get any more gigs out of it (the Trio evolved into an artistic modern creative jazz trio. Occasionally we still play at weddings or conferences, but our main goal is to play at the national and international jazz and theatre stages, like we did at North Sea Jazz in 2008, or the Jazz Impuls theatre tour in 2009. We now play our own music instead of standards), but I was still paying, so I thought, why not turn it the other way around, and maybe earn a few cents myself by putting Adsense on my page. Being a trumpet player costs a lot of money. You know the joke: what will a musician do when he wins the jackpot? Play until the money is spent. Only sad thing is, that it isn't a joke...So, why not try and get a little extra money, so that I can keep doing what I do.

To Dutch followers

Hi,

First of all, apologies to my Dutch followers. I am going to write all my posts in English, so that people from other countries have a chance to read my posts, too. I have a lot of contacts in the US of America, in Germany and in other countries, too, so Dutch would rule out too many people who might be interested in what I have to say. Hope you understand.
You can post in Dutch if you like, but I will answer in English. You can always send me an email if you have a specific question and request an answer in Dutch.
